Severe Thunderstorms Possible Today With Slight Risk of Damaging Winds, Hail, and Tornado

Unseasonably warm temperatures are expected across the region today, but the warm conditions could also bring the potential for severe thunderstorms later this afternoon and evening.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), scattered severe thunderstorms are possible with damaging wind gusts, large hail, and a few tornadoes all possible. Residents are encouraged to pay close attention to weather warnings if they are issued and to have multiple ways to receive alerts.

The NWS says today’s outlook remains uncertain. “Today’s forecast remains a very challenging one in regards to the potential for severe thunderstorms,” the National Weather Service wrote in its forecast discussion. “At this point, there’s a wide range of potential solutions on the table, with very low confidence in which solution will ultimately verify.”

Before any storms develop, temperatures are expected to climb into the upper 70s to lower 80s during the afternoon. Those readings could challenge record high temperatures for the date. The warm weather is occurring ahead of a powerful cold front expected to move through the region later today, bringing a significant change in conditions after the storms move through. Some models even show light snow possible tomorrow (Thursday).
