Takoma Park-Silver Spring Co-op will host its annual Earth Day celebration on Sunday, April 12, from 10am to 3pm, inviting the community to a free day of music, educational programming, food, and family-friendly activities. This year’s theme, “Change Grows Here,” highlights the Co-op’s focus on food, climate, and community. A community bike ride will also take place during the event.
Held at the TPSS Co-op, the event will feature live performances, speakers, interactive activities for children, and tabling by a wide range of organizations working on issues including sustainability, composting, food systems, environmental education, and civic engagement. Attendees will also be able to connect with local nonprofits and elected officials while enjoying offerings from several local food vendors.
“The Earth Day Celebration really represents the heart of our mission,” said TPSS Co-op General Manager Mike Houston. “It’s a chance for our community to come together, share knowledge collaboratively, and explore how we can build a more just and sustainable food system, together.”
The day’s schedule begins with a 10am kickoff, followed by music for kids from Mr. Lilo at 11am. Educational sessions include two store tours led by Stephanie Miller of Zero Waste DC on reducing food and packaging waste while shopping at the Co-op, as well as a noon presentation by Rini Saha of Greenthinker titled “Demystifying the Realities of Recycling.” Live music throughout the day will also include Takoma Park band The U-Liners at 12:30pm and Song Riot at 2:10pm.
In addition to the programming, families can enjoy giant bubbles, sidewalk chalk, and Earth Day crafts led by Takoma Cooperative Nursery School. Organizations scheduled to table include Bethesda Green, One Montgomery Green, Montgomery County Food Council, University of Maryland Insect Zoo, Small Things Matter, and the City of Takoma Park Composting Program, among others.
Food vendors on site will include Alera’s Table, BelieveN Bread, Cheryl’s Kitchen, Cookie YAY!, Ethiopian Delights, and Little Bites Catering, offering everything from jerk chicken and chickpeas to vegan cookies, empanadas, breads, and Ethiopian dishes.
