Montgomery County Native Sam Anas Ties KHL Single-Season Points Record

Montgomery County native Sam Anas has etched his name into international hockey history, tying the Kontinental Hockey League’s all-time single-season points record with a remarkable 89 points in 67 games.

The Potomac native matched the record previously set by Nikita Gusev, delivering one of the most productive offensive seasons the league has ever seen. His performance stands out even more given the level of competition, as the KHL is widely regarded as the second-best professional hockey league in the world behind the NHL. While it includes teams from multiple countries, it is largely considered Russia’s top professional league, with the majority of its teams and funding based there.

Anas, widely regarded as one of the top hockey players ever produced in Maryland, has long been a cornerstone of the local hockey community. He began his career skating for the Montgomery Blue Devils at Rockville Ice Arena before continuing his development with Team Maryland and the Washington Little Caps.

His impact was evident early on. At Landon School in Bethesda, Anas led the program to its first-ever state championship and an undefeated season in 2011, cementing his reputation as a high-level talent well before turning professional.

After a successful career in North America, including winning the Calder Cup with the Hershey Bears in 2023, Anas took his talents overseas, where he has now delivered a historic season. His 89-point campaign not only ties the league record but further reinforces his identity as a dynamic, high-end offensive player capable of producing at the highest levels of professional hockey.

Despite playing abroad, Anas has remained closely connected to his roots. Following the Calder Cup victory, he brought the trophy back to Rockville Ice Arena, celebrating with the local community and even placing it inside his old high school locker, a full-circle moment for a player who came up through Montgomery County’s hockey system.

Now, with a record-tying season in one of the world’s top leagues, Anas continues to elevate both his career and the profile of hockey in the region he calls home.
