Ekiben Set for Frederick Debut With Free Food on Opening Day

Ekiben is officially making its long-anticipated move beyond Baltimore, with the popular Asian fusion restaurant set to open its first Frederick location this week.

Doors will open Thursday, April 30 at 4:30pm at 500 N Market Street, marking a major milestone for the brand as it expands for the first time outside of its home base. To celebrate, Ekiben is offering a free menu item on opening day, adding even more excitement to what is expected to be a highly anticipated debut.

Founded in 2014 by Ephrem Abebe, Steve Chu, and Nikhil Yesupriya, Ekiben began as a humble hotdog cart at the Fells Point Farmers Market. What started as a small operation quickly grew into one of Maryland’s most beloved food brands, known for its bold Asian fusion flavors and creative menu items like its signature steamed buns, rice bowls, and standout fried chicken.

The Frederick location will be the fourth brick-and-mortar restaurant for Ekiben, joining its existing spots in Fells Point, Hampden, and South Baltimore, along with a growing catering operation. The expansion represents a significant step forward for the brand as it continues to build on its strong following across the region.

Ekiben’s rise has been fueled not only by its unique menu, but also by national recognition. The restaurant was recently named the fourth-best fried chicken spot in the United States and Canada by Yelp, based on reviews from Elite Squad members. It has also earned a place on Yelp’s Top 100 Restaurants in the U.S. list for three consecutive years and was previously recognized as the best place to get a sandwich in Maryland by Travel & Leisure.

For co-founder Steve Chu, the expansion carries local significance. A Gaithersburg native and Quince Orchard High School graduate, Chu has played a key role in shaping Ekiben’s identity and growth. His work has earned industry recognition, including semifinalist honors for Eater’s Young Gun Awards and a James Beard Foundation semifinalist nod for Best Chef of the Mid-Atlantic.

Beyond the food, Ekiben has built a reputation for its community-focused approach. Chu has remained actively involved in youth mentorship initiatives in Baltimore and has emphasized creating welcoming, inclusive spaces through the restaurant’s culture.

With its first location outside of Baltimore, Ekiben is bringing its widely celebrated menu and community-driven philosophy to Frederick, where strong turnout is expected for opening day.
