Board of Education Approves Adjusted 2026-2027 School Calendar Following 30,000+ Survey Responses

The Montgomery County Board of Education has approved an adjusted calendar for the 2026-2027 school year following extensive feedback from families and staff, with more than 30,000 responses submitted through a community survey.

The approved option reflects a clear preference for stability, including keeping the traditional late-August start and preserving the length of both winter and spring breaks.

The school year will begin with Transition Day on Monday, August 24, 2026, followed by the first full day of school on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. There are no changes to pre-service days or the early months of the school year.

The calendar includes 181 instructional days and builds in multiple options for weather-related make-up days. If needed, spring make-up days are scheduled for April 22 and May 17, aligning with existing non-instructional days. An additional end-of-year make-up window is set for June 14 through June 16, with further flexibility available before Juneteenth if necessary.

Per MCPS:

“What stays the same:

  • Start of school: Monday, Aug. 24, 2026 remains Transition Day.
  • First full day of school: Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2026.
  • No changes to pre-service days or the early months of the school year.

  • Spring make-up days (if needed): April 22 and May 17 (aligned with existing non-instructional days).
