Line Down the Block for Fried Chicken Ranked 4th Best in the Country

Ekiben’s highly anticipated debut in Frederick drew a line down the block on opening day, signaling strong demand for the Baltimore-based favorite as it expands beyond its home market for the first time. The restaurant was previously ranked as having the 4th best fried chicken in all of the United States and Canada by Yelp.

While some online joked about long wait times, the overall reception has been overwhelmingly positive across social media, with many praising both the food and the energy surrounding the opening. The turnout reflects the brand’s growing reputation and the excitement that had been building ahead of its arrival.

Ekiben opened its doors Thursday, April 30 at 4:30pm at 500 N Market Street, marking a major milestone for the Asian fusion concept. To celebrate the launch, the restaurant offered a free menu item to customers on opening day, adding to the already high level of anticipation.

Founded in 2014 by Ephrem Abebe, Steve Chu, and Nikhil Yesupriya, Ekiben began as a hotdog cart at the Fells Point Farmers Market. It has since grown into one of Maryland’s most recognizable food brands, known for its bold flavors and creative menu featuring steamed buns, rice bowls, and widely praised fried chicken.

The Frederick restaurant becomes Ekiben’s fourth brick-and-mortar location, joining its existing spots in Fells Point, Hampden, and South Baltimore, along with a growing catering presence. The expansion represents a significant step as the brand begins to move beyond Baltimore.

Part of the buzz surrounding Ekiben comes from national recognition. The restaurant was recently ranked the fourth-best fried chicken spot in the United States and Canada by Yelp, based on reviews from Elite Squad members. It has also landed on Yelp’s Top 100 Restaurants in the U.S. list for three consecutive years and was previously named the best place to get a sandwich in Maryland by Travel & Leisure.

The opening also carries a local connection. Co-founder Steve Chu is a Gaithersburg native and Quince Orchard High School graduate who has helped shape the brand’s identity and growth. His work has earned industry recognition, including semifinalist honors for Eater’s Young Gun Awards and a James Beard Foundation semifinalist nod for Best Chef of the Mid-Atlantic.

Beyond the menu, Ekiben has built a reputation for its community-focused approach, with Chu remaining involved in youth mentorship efforts in Baltimore and emphasizing a welcoming, inclusive culture within the business.
