Community Rallies Around Family of Middle School Student Killed in Crash Earlier This Month

The Montgomery County community is rallying to support the family of 14-year-old Jossedan Sorto Rivera, an 8th grade student at A. Mario Loiederman Middle School who died following a serious crash earlier this month in Frederick County.

According to Frederick County Fire and Rescue, crews were dispatched at approximately 4:51pm on May 2 to a crash involving entrapment and ejection on eastbound I-70 near mile marker 39 in the Myersville area.

Responding crews located one occupant who had been ejected from the vehicle, another trapped inside, and a third person injured. Due to the severity of the injuries, Trooper 3 and Trooper 5 were requested to transport two patients with life-threatening injuries to trauma centers, while a third occupant was transported by ground to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Eastbound I-70 remained closed for approximately four hours as Maryland State Police investigated the crash.

In a letter sent to families, Loiederman Middle School confirmed the passing of Jossedan and shared that counseling support would be available for students and staff. “It is with deep sadness that I share the sudden passing of Jossedan Sorto Rivera, an 8th grade student at our school,” the letter stated. “For those who knew Jossedan, we encourage you to remember and celebrate his life. He was a valued member of our community, and his loss is deeply felt.”

A GoFundMe created to support the family described Jossedan as a “bright and kind 14-year-old” who “was never mean to a soul, always respectful to adults and friends alike.” The fundraiser notes that he loved soccer and admired Brazilian soccer star Kaká.

According to the fundraiser, Jossedan’s family came to the United States from Honduras seeking a better future. Donations are being collected to help the family with burial expenses and other financial needs as they grieve the loss of their son.
