Laurel Issues Statement Following Stabbing, Shooting During Cinco de Mayo Celebration

The City of Laurel has issued an official statement following multiple violent incidents tied to a Cinco de Mayo celebration earlier this month at Amigos Mexican Grill.

According to a statement released Monday by the City of Laurel’s Department of Communications, the city has suspended the Use and Occupancy Permit for Amigos Mexican Grill at 13600 Baltimore Avenue effective Friday, May 8. Officials said the establishment was ordered closed pursuant to Laurel City Code sections 18-19 and 18-66.

City officials said preliminary findings related to the May 5 event include the alleged misrepresentation of the security plan, alleged misrepresentation involving the Prince George’s County Board of License Commissioners, and alleged misrepresentation of the intended use of the space.

“The safety of our residents, visitors, and businesses remains our highest priority,” Mayor Keith R. Sydnor said in the statement. “The City of Laurel will continue working with our public safety and regulatory partners to ensure accountability and compliance with all City requirements.”

The suspension will remain in effect for up to 30 days or until all conditions established by the city have been satisfied.

The Laurel Police Department previously provided an update Monday regarding two separate incidents that occurred during the Cinco de Mayo celebration.

Police said one incident involved a domestic-related stabbing. Investigators identified and charged Shon Juan Cook Jr., 26, of Howard County, in connection with the stabbing. Authorities said Cook has since turned himself in and is awaiting trial. Detectives said the stabbing was isolated and unrelated to the second incident.

The second incident involved a shooting outside the LongHorn Steakhouse during the same evening. Police said investigators reviewed video footage and identified a person believed to be the shooter, but are asking the public for assistance confirming the individual’s identity.

Authorities said victims from both incidents were transported to local hospitals and are currently in stable condition.
