Multi-Vehicle Crash, Fuel Spill Cause Heavy Delays on Outer Loop of I-495

A multi-vehicle crash and a secondary fuel spill incident caused major delays Wednesday morning on the Outer Loop of I-495 in Montgomery County.

MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer reported at 5:23am that crews were responding to a collision involving multiple vehicles on the Outer Loop between Connecticut Avenue and Rockville Pike, with some lanes blocked.

MATOC reported at 5:29am that all westbound lanes were blocked on I-495 past MD-185/Connecticut Avenue, with delays of approximately 2.5 miles beginning after MD-97/Georgia Avenue.

At 5:33am, Piringer reported a secondary incident in the area of Exit 34/Rockville Pike and northbound I-270 involving a single vehicle, described as a 3,500-gallon fuel supply truck. The incident resulted in a fuel spill, with some lanes blocked.

Piringer later clarified that the truck had “sloshed” fuel out of the top of the vehicle, spilling product onto the roadway. MCFRS hazmat crews placed absorbent on the spill. Several vehicles were involved in the earlier collision, and EMS evaluated several patients, though Piringer said there were no serious injuries, “if any.”

By 6:03am, MATOC reported that all travel lanes had reopened and the incident had been confined to the right shoulder. Remaining delays were approximately 5.5 miles, beginning after MD-650/New Hampshire Avenue.
