Montgomery County Police Warn Residents About Catalytic Converter Thefts

The Montgomery County Police Department is reminding residents to stay alert as catalytic converter thefts continue to be a problem across the region.

In a crime prevention post shared this week, MCPD warned that “catalytic converter theft is fast, quiet, and happens when you least expect it,” while encouraging drivers to take a few simple precautions to make their vehicles less appealing targets.

Police recommend parking in well-lit, visible areas whenever possible, especially near security cameras or in busy parking lots. MCPD also noted that SUVs and trucks are often targeted more frequently because they sit higher off the ground, making catalytic converters easier to access.

The department also encouraged residents to consider protective measures such as catalytic converter shields, car alarms, immobilizers, and motion-activated lighting at home.

Drivers are advised to keep important vehicle information documented, including VIN numbers and updated insurance information, and to report suspicious activity immediately.

According to MCPD, residents should call 911 if they hear sawing or grinding noises coming from underneath a nearby vehicle or see someone crawling under parked cars. “A few simple steps can make your vehicle a harder target,” the department said. “Prevention starts before theft happens.”
