With summer approaching and employers across the country continuing to deal with labor shortages, nearby Columbia has been ranked one of the best places in America for summer jobs.
According to WalletHub’s newly released 2026 Best Places for Summer Jobs report, Columbia ranked No. 4 overall nationwide, making it the only Maryland city to place in the top 10.
WalletHub compared more than 180 U.S. markets across 21 different metrics, including the availability of summer jobs, median income for part-time workers, commuter friendliness, affordability, and workforce participation among young people.
Columbia earned an overall score of 57.46. The Howard County community also ranked No. 6 nationally in WalletHub’s Youth Job Market category, reflecting the strength of local employment opportunities available to younger workers heading into the summer months.
In the report’s Social Environment & Affordability category, Columbia ranked No. 32 nationally. The top five cities overall were:
- South Burlington, Vermont
- Scottsdale, Arizona
- Rapid City, South Dakota
- Columbia, Maryland
- Pearl City, Hawaii
According to WalletHub, the best summer job markets are those that combine strong hiring opportunities with competitive pay and accessible working conditions for younger employees.
The report also highlighted several national comparisons, including Orlando, Florida having the highest number of part-time job openings per 1,000 people ages 16 to 24, while Scottsdale, Arizona had the nation’s highest median income for part-time workers when adjusted for cost of living.
Columbia’s strong overall finish suggests the area continues to offer a competitive environment for students and young adults seeking seasonal employment opportunities during the summer months.
