Councilmember Glass Pushes for Changes to Montgomery County School Board

Councilmember Evan Glass is calling for structural reforms to Montgomery County Public Schools and the Montgomery County Board of Education, including adding a representative appointed by the County Executive to the school board.

In an opinion piece published Wednesday, Glass said the proposal is intended to improve transparency, fiscal oversight, and communication between MCPS and County government leaders. According to Glass, the appointed member would participate in budget deliberations and serve as a liaison between the Board of Education and County officials overseeing public finances, but would not interfere with educational decision-making.

The proposal comes as the Montgomery County Council recently approved a record $3.7 billion MCPS budget for FY2027, an increase of $143.7 million from the previous year. Glass also noted that MCPS enrollment has declined by nearly 9,000 students over the past seven years and is projected to continue decreasing.

Glass said stronger coordination and accountability measures are necessary as the County continues increasing funding for the school system.
