Maryland hospitals received a wide range of grades in the newly released Spring 2026 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, with 17 hospitals earning an “A,” 11 receiving a “B,” 12 receiving a “C,” and one hospital receiving a “D” for patient safety performance. Full list below.
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade evaluates hospitals on their ability to protect patients from preventable harm, medical errors, injuries, and infections. Grades are based on expert analysis of publicly available data using up to 31 national, evidence-based safety measures.
In Montgomery County, Adventist HealthCare White Oak Medical Center in Silver Spring and Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center in Rockville both earned “A” grades. Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda also received an “A.”
Meanwhile, MedStar Montgomery Medical Center in Olney and Suburban Hospital in Bethesda each earned “B” grades, while Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring and Holy Cross Germantown Hospital both received “C” grades.
Across Maryland, several hospitals earned top marks, including Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, UM Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie, and UPMC Western Maryland in Cumberland.
At the other end of the rankings, University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center in Upper Marlboro was the only Maryland hospital to receive a “D” grade this spring.
The Leapfrog Group notes that the grades are intended to help patients make informed healthcare decisions, though it cautions that the scores do not guarantee specific patient outcomes.
