Watkins Mill Elementary School students from Montgomery Village and Gaithersburg once performed on one of the nation’s biggest stages, taking part in festivities surrounding President Bill Clinton’s 1993 inauguration at the Capital Centre (video below).
Under the direction of choral instructor Mrs. Judith Garcia, the school’s chorus was selected to participate in the inaugural celebration, joining a major production that featured Michael Jackson performing “Heal the World.”
The performance has recently resurfaced online after a now-grown participant shared memories and behind-the-scenes details from the event in a Facebook post. In the post, the former child performer recalled unexpectedly being selected during rehearsal to join Michael Jackson on stage after another child became overwhelmed.
The post also mentioned reconnecting during the COVID-19 lockdowns with alumni from a Maryland elementary school choir that had been chosen for the performance, identified as Watkins Mill Elementary School.
The chorus program at Watkins Mill Elementary was well known during that era under Mrs. Garcia’s leadership. In addition to performing during Clinton’s inauguration festivities, the school also performed at the Kennedy Center Honors in the early 1990s.
For many former students, the performances remain unforgettable memories and a unique moment in Montgomery County history, placing local elementary school students on nationally televised stages alongside some of the biggest names in entertainment and politics.
