Bethesda Co-op Closes Permanently After Nearly 51 Years in Business

After nearly 51 years serving the community, Bethesda Co-op officially closed its doors for good on Sunday, May 31.

The longtime neighborhood grocery store, located at 6500 Seven Locks Rd. in Cabin John, shared an emotional farewell message with customers on social media as it prepared to close at 8pm Sunday evening. “Our Beloved Bethesda Co-op Becomes a Beautiful Memory at 8pm Tonight,” the store wrote. “Come By, Reminisce, & Walk Through One Last Time.”

The co-op thanked the community that supported it for more than five decades, writing, “We love you, Cabin John. Nearly 51 years providing good, real, organic food to our community.”

Although regular business operations have ended, the store noted that staff will remain on-site in the coming days to move out inventory and equipment. Community members are invited to stop by, say goodbye, and inquire about purchasing shelves, displays, or other equipment being removed from the store. “Remember us, because we will always remember you,” the co-op wrote in its farewell message.

The closure marks the end of a business that had become a fixture in the community since opening in the mid-1970s. In March, the Bethesda Co-op announced it would cease operations at the end of May, describing the decision as a difficult one for the small neighborhood grocery store.

At the time, the co-op reflected on its longevity in an increasingly competitive grocery industry, noting that surviving for more than five decades as a community-focused cooperative was an accomplishment.

Over the years, Bethesda Co-op developed a loyal customer base by offering organic foods, household goods, and an alternative approach to grocery shopping centered on community involvement and accessibility. The store also served as a first workplace for generations of local teenagers and became a gathering place for residents seeking a more personal shopping experience.
