Free CPR Training Event Coming To Montgomery Blair High School This Weekend

In recognition of CPR & AED Awareness Week, MedStar Health and several community partners will host a free hands-only CPR training event in Silver Spring designed to equip residents with lifesaving skills for cardiac emergencies.

The 3rd Annual Bystander CPR Workshop will take place on Saturday, June 6, from 11am to 1pm at Montgomery Blair High School.

According to MedStar Health, CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival following cardiac arrest. However, a recent survey conducted by the healthcare system found that only 52% of adults feel confident performing CPR. More than three-quarters of respondents were unaware that hands-only chest compressions are an effective form of CPR.

Attendees will receive instruction on hands-only CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) use from MedStar Health physicians and trainers from Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service, Montgomery County Public Schools, and the American Heart Association. The event is also supported by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Theta Omega Omega Chapter and RQI Partners.

Speakers and participants include MedStar Health cardiologist Dr. Minhal Makshood, MCFRS Community Action Coordinator Lt. Irvin Smith, American Heart Association Community Impact Director Lucía Zegarra, and two sudden cardiac arrest survivors who will share their stories. Washington Capitals mascot Slapshot is also scheduled to attend.

The event will be held at Montgomery Blair High School, located at 51 University Boulevard East in Silver Spring and you can register for the free event here.
