Five months after a devastating fire forced the closure of one of Frederick’s most iconic restaurants, The Red Horse Steak House says rebuilding efforts are moving forward and an October reopening is now a possibility.
In an update shared June 7, the restaurant’s ownership acknowledged the challenges of navigating the rebuilding process, noting that restoring the longtime Frederick institution involves far more than simply hiring a contractor and beginning repairs.
“Nothing moves quickly with this process unfortunately,” the restaurant wrote. “You can’t just hire a contractor and fix it, I’ve found out.” According to the update, local firm GTM Architects is finalizing construction drawings that are expected to be completed early next week. Once finished, the plans will be submitted to the City of Frederick and the health department for review.
Ownership said major contractors throughout the region are currently preparing bids for the project and have indicated that the work could be completed as soon as October. “We want it back as soon as possible more than anyone,” the restaurant shared. “The Horse will be galloping soon.”
The update is the latest chapter in the recovery effort following a January 6 fire that caused extensive damage to the restaurant’s building at 996 W. Patrick Street. At the time of the fire, ownership said the cause was unknown and confirmed that no one was inside the building when the blaze occurred. The restaurant announced it would remain closed until further notice while recovery plans were developed.
While describing the loss as heartbreaking, the team quickly reassured customers that they intended to rebuild.
“The Red Horse has been part of Frederick for decades, and she is not done yet,” the restaurant said in its January statement. Known for its steaks, seafood, and long-standing place in Frederick’s dining scene, The Red Horse Steak House has served the community since 1968 and has become a landmark destination for generations of local families and visitors.
Since the fire, the restaurant has received an outpouring of support from customers across the region, many sharing memories of celebrations, family dinners, and traditions built around visits to the longtime establishment.
