Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service crews are responding to a major electrical incident near the Medical Center Metro station that has left six people injured.

In an initial update, MCFRS reported crews were operating in the area of the 8800 block of Connecticut Avenue for a reported electrocution incident inside a Metro tunnel shaft. Fire and rescue personnel, including Rail Officers and specialized crews, were dispatched to what officials described as a complex, high-hazard environment.

MCFRS said crews were working to locate, access, and remove victims while providing immediate medical care and managing significant electrical hazards.

In a subsequent update, MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer described the incident as a possible electrical explosion involving an electrical vault or shaft near Medical Center Metro, with the initial report indicating multiple injured workers.

MCFRS is coordinating closely with Metro’s Operations Center to mitigate electrical hazards, manage power risks, and ensure responder safety. Officials said the underground location and ongoing electrical dangers have made the operation especially challenging.

Residents are asked to avoid the area and allow emergency personnel to operate safely. This remains a developing story and will be updated as additional information becomes available.
