Detectives with the Montgomery County Department of Police Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating a fatal pedestrian collision that occurred early Monday morning in Rockville.
According to police, officers from the 4th District and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded at approximately 2:09am on June 8 to the intersection of Veirs Mill Road and Gail Street for a reported collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.
The preliminary investigation determined that 39-year-old Irrael Lopez Garcia was in the roadway when he was struck by a silver 2009 Honda Civic traveling eastbound on Veirs Mill Road. Investigators initially believed the victim may have been operating a scooter, but have since determined he was not on a scooter at the time of the collision.
Lopez Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said the driver of the Honda remained at the scene following the collision. The investigation remains active and could take several weeks or months to complete.
