The Fifth Annual Kensington Juneteenth Celebration will return to St. Paul Park on Saturday, June 13, bringing together residents, local businesses, community organizations, historians, musicians, and civic leaders for an afternoon honoring freedom, resilience, and community. The free, family-friendly event will take place from 12pm to 4pm and is open to all ages.
Celebrated since 1865 and observed as a federal holiday since 2021, Juneteenth commemorates the date when some of the last enslaved people in the Confederacy were informed of their freedom following the Civil War. Across the country, Juneteenth celebrations serve as opportunities to reflect on history, promote education and dialogue, and strengthen community connections.
Organizers say this year’s event will also recognize the 250th year of the United States, Maryland, and Montgomery County under the theme “Honoring 250 Years of Resilience & Freedom.” Attendees can enjoy live music and performances, living history interpreters, local vendors, Black-owned businesses, food and beverages, sweet treats, family activities, and a dedicated kids’ zone.
The celebration is organized by a multiracial coalition of community members, historians, re-enactors, faith leaders, civic organizations, and local businesses working together to commemorate Juneteenth while fostering conversation and understanding.
Organizers describe the event as an opportunity to acknowledge the past while charting a path toward a stronger future. Additional information can be found on the event website.
