Search Continues for Swimmer Presumed Drowned in Potomac River

Update Monday, June 15 at 8:30am: Montgomery County Fire & Rescue crews searched Sunday evening for a young adult male who went missing in the Potomac River near Billy Goat Trail A and Sandy Landing after becoming separated from a group while swimming.

MCGRS and Fairfax County Fire and Rescue personnel searched the river by land, air and water after the incident was reported around 6:15 p.m. Sunday.

The operation involved eight boats, approximately 45 rescue personnel and underwater sonar equipment operated by MCFRS Swift Water Rescue teams. Despite an extensive search of the swimmer’s last known location and surrounding areas, crews were unable to locate the individual.

On Monday morning, June 15, Montgomery County Fire & Rescue resumed search operations in the Potomac River in the area of Great Falls and the Old Angler’s Inn. Rescue crews deployed boats and continued searching for the missing swimmer, who is now presumed drowned.

Officials said search efforts will continue as crews work to locate the young adult male.
