Drivers heading through Gaithersburg this evening should expect significant traffic impacts as the city prepares for SummerFest at Bohrer Park.
Beginning at 5pm, lane reductions will be in place along South Frederick Avenue (MD 355) adjacent to Bohrer Park. Traffic pattern changes will also take effect for the event, with vehicles prohibited from crossing or making left turns onto South Frederick Avenue between Cedar Avenue and Central Avenue.
City officials are encouraging motorists who are not attending SummerFest to use alternate routes and avoid the area if possible. To help manage the large crowds expected for the event, crossing guards will be stationed along South Frederick Avenue at South Summit Avenue, Education Boulevard, and Deer Park Road.
In addition, Summit Avenue between Hutton Street and South Frederick Avenue will close to vehicle traffic beginning at 5pm to provide a safe pedestrian route to and from the festival. Officials remind drivers to use extra caution throughout the evening, as heavy pedestrian traffic is expected around Bohrer Park.
SummerFest runs from 6pm to 11pm and features live entertainment, food vendors, family activities, and a fireworks display scheduled for approximately 9:20pm.
