The Washington metropolitan area, including many suburbs in Maryland, has been ranked the fourth most educated metropolitan area in the United States for 2026, according to a new report released by personal finance website WalletHub.
The annual study compared the nation’s 150 largest metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) across 11 different metrics designed to measure education levels and outcomes. Factors included the percentage of adults with bachelor’s, master’s, and professional degrees, public school quality, and educational attainment gaps among different racial groups.
The Washington metro area, which includes Montgomery County and much of the surrounding region, earned an overall score of 81.93. The region ranked third nationally for educational attainment, reflecting its exceptionally high concentration of residents with college and advanced degrees.
However, the study also highlighted room for improvement. The Washington metro area ranked 36th in the category measuring the quality of education and educational attainment gaps, suggesting disparities still exist despite the region’s overall educational strength.
Ann Arbor, Michigan, claimed the top spot with an overall score of 94.48, followed by Durham-Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, California. The top 10 most educated metropolitan areas for 2026 are:

According to WalletHub, education continues to have a significant impact on earning potential. The company noted that the median earnings of a high school graduate are only about 39% of what someone with a professional degree earns.
WalletHub’s rankings were based on 11 metrics spanning educational attainment, school quality, and equity, offering a broad look at where some of the nation’s most educated populations live and work.
