Police Increasing DUI Patrols for Fourth of July Weekend

Maryland State Police are urging motorists to drive responsibly during the Independence Day holiday weekend and announced that troopers statewide will conduct increased enforcement efforts from Friday, July 3, through Sunday, July 5.

The Maryland State Police Impaired Driving Reduction Effort (SPIDRE) team, a specialized unit trained to identify impaired drivers, will also be deployed to help reduce alcohol-related crashes, injuries and fatalities. State police said the increased enforcement initiative will focus on impaired driving, distracted driving, speeding and other dangerous behaviors.

Officials are encouraging anyone celebrating the holiday to plan ahead by designating a sober driver, using public transportation or rideshare services, and never allowing an impaired person to get behind the wheel. State police also reminded hosts of holiday gatherings to provide non-alcoholic beverages, ensure safe transportation options are available and intervene if guests attempt to drive while impaired.
