Takoma Park Independence Day Parade And Street Party Called Off

The Takoma Park Independence Day Committee has canceled this year’s Fourth of July parade and evening street party due to forecasted extreme heat.

In a message sent to participants, volunteers, and community stakeholders, committee president Tara Marie Egan said the decision was made out of concern for public safety as the Washington region faces dangerous temperatures.

According to the committee, the heat index on July 4 is expected to reach at least 105 degrees. National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for the region, and Montgomery County has declared a Heat Emergency through the holiday weekend.

Egan noted that parade participants would be required to gather and wait outdoors before the event begins, with limited opportunities to rest or cool down once the parade is underway. The committee said those conditions pose particular risks for young children, older adults, individuals who are especially sensitive to heat, and animals participating in the parade.

“We feel that it would not be safe, or responsible, to ask our community to march or to gather in this heat,” Egan wrote. The committee acknowledged the significant planning that goes into the annual celebration and thanked participating groups, dignitaries, volunteers, and others who had prepared for this year’s events.

Residents are encouraged to stay safe during the holiday weekend and utilize local cooling centers if needed. The committee said it looks forward to returning with the Takoma Park Fourth of July celebration next year.
