Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service investigators have determined that the fire that heavily damaged a townhouse on Copperstone Court in Rockville on Friday was accidental, although the exact cause could not be identified due to the extent of the damage.
According to MCFRS spokesperson David Pazos, the townhouse was listed for sale and had undergone a home inspection earlier that day, during which no significant problems were reported. Investigators determined the fire originated in the attic area, where several potential ignition sources were identified. However, due to the extensive damage, investigators were unable to rule out a specific cause.
The fire broke out Thursday in the 1000 block of Copperstone Court, with crews arriving to find fire extending through the roof of the end-unit townhouse. A second alarm was requested due to the extreme heat and the volume of fire. Approximately 95 firefighters responded to the scene. All occupants safely evacuated, no injuries were reported, and the fire did not spread to neighboring homes. Damage is estimated at approximately $300,000.
