The property that was home to the Montgomery Hills Car Wash for more than 50 years has officially been sold to the State of Maryland for approximately $2.22 million, as according to recently recorded land records.
The 12,742 SF property at 9500 Georgia Avenue, located in front of Aldi, closed last year after serving the Montgomery Hills community for more than 50 years. The site has now been acquired by the Maryland State Highway Administration and will be used as a staging area for the upcoming Georgia Avenue Safety and Accessibility Project, according to Maryland Newsletters.
The purchase marks another step forward for the long-planned project, which is designed to improve safety, accessibility, and connectivity along a 0.7-mile stretch of Georgia Avenue between Forest Glen Road and 16th Street.
The Maryland Department of Transportation announced last year that it had secured $50.8 million to fully fund the project. Final design work and utility relocations are currently underway, with construction expected to begin in spring 2028.
The project will include the removal of portions of the existing reversible center lane in favor of a landscaped median with dedicated left-turn lanes, narrower travel lanes intended to calm traffic, a new two-way separated bicycle path, upgraded sidewalks, improved pedestrian crossings, and changes to the I-495/Georgia Avenue interchange to improve safety and traffic flow.
Georgia Avenue carries approximately 71,500 vehicles each day through the Montgomery Hills corridor, which has long been identified as one of Montgomery County’s highest transportation priorities. Local and state officials have described the project as a once-in-a-generation investment that will improve safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, and transit users while better connecting the Montgomery Hills community.
