The Damascus High School cheerleading program is remembering one of its most beloved supporters, June S. Ward, who passed away peacefully on April 18, 2026, at the age of 87.
In a social media post on Thursday, July 16th, the team shared news of Ward’s passing and announced that her memorial service will be held at 11am on Saturday, July 18, at Wesley Grove United Methodist Church, located at 23640 Woodfield Road in Gaithersburg.
Born on October 6, 1938, in Damascus, Ward spent her entire life deeply connected to the community she loved. A graduate of Damascus High School, she was a cheerleader as a student before returning to dedicate 37 years working at the school. During that time, she also served as a cheer and pom coach, mentoring generations of students.
Known affectionately as “Mom,” “Nan,” and “Junebug,” Ward’s love for Damascus High School never faded. Even after retiring, she remained one of the cheer squad’s most dedicated supporters, attending events and continuing to encourage student-athletes.
In recognition of her lasting impact, the Damascus High School cheer program established the June Ward Award, an annual honor presented to a cheerleader who exemplifies the spirit, dedication, and character that Ward embodied throughout her life.
According to her obituary, Ward’s loyalty to Damascus High School was unwavering, and those who knew her understood just how deeply she loved the school and its community.
The Damascus High School cheerleading program encouraged former students, friends, and community members to attend Saturday’s memorial service and celebrate the life of someone who meant so much to generations of Damascus families.
