Maryland Restaurant’s Sushi Tacos Go Viral

At first glance, sushi and tacos sound like an unlikely pairing. But at Poke Taco in Baltimore, that combination has become one of the city’s most eye-catching food trends. Instead of a traditional tortilla, each taco is built inside a crispy tempura-fried nori shell, then packed with sushi rice, fresh seafood, crunchy vegetables, and house-made sauces for a handheld twist on classic sushi.
The concept builds on the founders’ successful Poke Bowl brand, bringing a fresh fusion idea that has expanded beyond Maryland.

Curious whether the viral concept lives up to the hype, Mr. 8 That made the trip to Baltimore to check out Poke Taco and some of the loaded creations they have on their menu. Mr. 8 That rates every restaurant using two simple categories: price and taste, each scored on a scale of 1-5. Add the two scores together, and if a restaurant reaches a total of 8 or higher, it officially “8 that.”

Mr. 8 That: “First and foremost, each one of these tacos was packed with fish and accenting toppings. The Tide Tuna & Salmon Taco had generous portions of each fish, complemented by creamy avocado, crunchy slaw and a sweet chili dressing that brought everything together. The Tempura Shrimp taco had 4 large pieces of shrimp with the same fresh slaw and a sweet teriyaki glaze that went well with the fried shrimp. The Urban Grilled Eel Taco gave you the potent taste of the eel with a sweet glaze that mirrored the traditional sushi roll. Lastly, the spicy tuna roll had copious amounts of Tuna in there, with a slight heat and tempura crunch that made me want to keep eating it.”

During his visit, Mr. 8 That tried the Tide Tuna & Salmon Taco, the Tempura Shrimp Taco, the Urban Grilled Eel Taco & The Spicy Tuna Taco. He gave the flavor a 4.5 and the price a 3.9, leading to a final score of 8.4 meaning Poke Taco definitely 8 that!
Poke Taco currently operates on Tuesday – Sunday from 11 AM – 9:30 PM, with Sunday having slightly reduced hours from 12 PM – 8 PM. You can find them at 2400 Boston St Suite 118, Baltimore, MD 21224.
