The Montgomery County Department of Police is warning residents about a scam in which fraudsters convince victims to withdraw large sums of cash, purchase gold bars, and hand them over to a courier under the false claim that their money or financial accounts are at risk.
According to MCPD, scammers often impersonate government officials, law enforcement officers, or bank representatives, telling victims their accounts have been compromised or are under investigation. They then pressure victims to act immediately, purchase gold bars or withdraw cash, and turn the valuables over to a courier for “safekeeping.”
Police emphasized that no government agency or law enforcement department will ever ask someone to withdraw money, buy gold bars, or hand cash or valuables to a courier. They also warn residents never to send money, gold, or cash to anyone they do not know or trust, and to be suspicious of anyone demanding immediate action or secrecy.
Anyone who believes they have been targeted by this scam is encouraged to contact the Montgomery County Police Department’s non-emergency line at 301-279-8000. Police are also urging residents to share the warning with family, friends, and neighbors, especially older adults who are often targeted by these scams.
