Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) has released a new family-friendly calendar for the 2026-2027 school year, replacing the traditional month-view calendar with a simplified format designed to make important dates easier to find and understand (available below).
According to MCPS, the redesigned calendar allows families to quickly see when students are in school, have early release days, and when winter and spring breaks occur, making it easier to plan ahead. The district also noted that the new format improves readability for all users, including those with visual impairments.
The family calendar follows the Board of Education’s approval this past spring of an adjusted 2026-2027 school calendar. The revised calendar was developed after extensive community feedback, with more than 30,000 responses submitted by families and staff through a districtwide survey.
The 2026-2027 calendar includes 181 instructional days and incorporates several options for weather-related make-up days. If needed, instructional days could be added on April 22 and May 17, which are currently scheduled as non-instructional days. An additional make-up window is also built into the end of the school year from June 14 through June 16, with additional flexibility available before the Juneteenth holiday if necessary.
MCPS said the updated family calendar is intended to provide a clearer, more accessible way for families to stay informed throughout the school year.
