Mama Wok originally opened in Montgomery County in the early 1990s with a location on Hungerford Dr. The local Chinese/Taiwanese concept, which has also served cuisine from other Asian countries over the years, has operated at several locations in Rockville.
Its longtime location at 9900 Key West Ave. closed a few months ago, and for a couple of months there wasn’t much noticeable activity inside the former restaurant. That has recently changed, with the interior now cleared out as preparations begin for what’s next.
A new restaurant under new ownership, with a similar name and concept, is preparing to open in the space. Mama Cafe has a hearing with Montgomery County Alcohol Beverage Services (ABS) for a beer and wine license scheduled for Thursday, September 17.
A timeline for Mama Cafe’s opening isn’t yet available, but at this point it does not appear that the space will undergo a major remodel, so the transition may not be a lengthy one. We’ll provide an update when additional information becomes available.
