New Study Ranks Maryland Second Nationwide for Women’s Equality

Maryland has been named the second-best state in the country for women’s equality, according to a new report from personal-finance website WalletHub.

Released ahead of Women’s Equality Day, the report compared all 50 states across 17 metrics related to workplace environment, education and health, and political empowerment. The data included differences between women and men in earnings, work hours, unemployment rates, entrepreneurship and representation in government.

Maryland ranked first nationally for its gender gaps in earnings, work hours and educational attainment among advanced-degree holders. The state also ranked 12th for both its minimum-wage workers gap and political representation gap, along with 22nd for its entrepreneurship rate gap.

Overall, Maryland finished No. 2 in the country for women’s equality in 2026. WalletHub released the report while noting that the United States currently ranks 43rd worldwide for gender equality.
