Rockville Police Share Vehicle Theft Prevention Tips Following Recent Incidents

The Rockville City Police Department is reminding residents and visitors to take precautions against auto thefts and thefts from vehicles.

The reminder comes one day after police asked for the public’s assistance identifying an individual detectives would like to speak with in connection with multiple thefts from vehicles in Rockville.

Police recommend locking all vehicle doors and windows, removing valuables and parking in well-lit areas with high visibility and pedestrian activity whenever possible. Drivers should never leave a vehicle unattended while its engine is running. Residents may also consider using a steering wheel lock or another visible anti-theft device to help deter potential thieves.

According to police, many auto thefts and thefts from vehicles are crimes of opportunity, and taking a few additional precautions can make a vehicle a less attractive target.

The individual pictured in the department’s earlier post was described as a white male wearing a black baseball-style hat backwards, a dark gray jacket or sweatshirt, a backpack and distinctive gray or black shoes featuring five stripes on the side.

Anyone who recognizes the individual or has information that may assist investigators is asked to contact RCPD detectives at 240-314-8938 or [email protected]. Police advised the public not to approach or confront him.

Suspicious activity may be reported to the Rockville City Police Department at 240-314-8900. Anyone witnessing an emergency or crime in progress should call 911.
