Kevin Meyer Selected to Lead Frederick Police Department

The City of Frederick has selected Kevin Meyer as its new chief of police following a nationwide search that attracted more than 30 applicants.

Meyer, who had served as interim chief of the Frederick Police Department since December 2025, officially assumed the permanent role this week. He has spent more than 18 years with the department and has worked in operational, investigative, supervisory and command positions.

His previous roles include patrol officer and supervisor, detective with the Drug Enforcement Unit, Training Unit supervisor, commander of the Support Services Division and Patrol Division 1, and deputy chief of the Operational Services Bureau.

“Kevin Meyer understands both this department and this community in a way that can only come from years of serving them,” Mayor Michael O’Connor said. “During his time leading the department, Kevin has also shown the steady judgment and thoughtful leadership this position demands.”

Meyer’s command experience includes helping coordinate the city’s law enforcement response to the March 2023 tanker explosion on Route 15 and overseeing responses to other critical incidents. He has also managed personnel and training operations, hiring and promotional processes, and law enforcement recruitment efforts.

“It is an incredible honor to be selected to lead the department where I have spent my career and in the community I have always called home,” Meyer said. “Frederick is growing and changing, and we have an obligation to grow with it while remaining grounded in professionalism, accountability and service.”

Meyer graduated from Urbana High School and lives in Frederick County with his family. He earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and criminology from the University of Maryland, College Park, and an MBA from the University of Maryland Global Campus. He is pursuing a Doctor of Criminal Justice in Leadership through Liberty University.

The search for a new police chief began in March and included a community-led search committee. O’Connor selected three finalists from a pool of applicants provided by the committee before choosing Meyer.
