The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration has begun construction on a $10.4 million project designed to improve safety and traffic operations along US 15 at Auburn Road and Angleberger Road in Frederick County.
The project will reconstruct the existing crossover to channel left turns from US 15 onto the side roads. A raised median will prevent traffic from Auburn Road and Angleberger Road from crossing both directions of US 15 at once.
Under the new traffic pattern, motorists traveling from Angleberger Road will turn right onto northbound US 15 before using a J-turn at a new crossover approximately 3,000 feet north of the intersection. New acceleration and deceleration lanes will allow motorists to make a U-turn and access southbound US 15.
According to the Federal Highway Administration, J-turn intersections significantly reduce the risk of right-angle crashes.
Construction will take place during daytime and overnight hours Monday through Friday. Motorists may encounter single-lane and shoulder closures along US 15. To limit disruptions during peak commuting hours, no work will occur on northbound US 15 between 2pm and 7pm or on southbound US 15 between 5am and 9am.
Automated speed enforcement devices will operate within the work zone. The posted speed limit along this section of US 15 is 55 mph. Kibler Construction Company of Finksburg is the project’s prime contractor. Construction is expected to be completed by late 2027.
