Gaithersburg Police arrested a 22-year-old man after officers found controlled dangerous substances and a short-barreled rifle during a recent traffic stop.
According to the Gaithersburg Police Department, patrol officers recently initiated the stop after observing a vehicle stopped and stationary in a traffic lane. When officers approached the vehicle, they found the driver and front-seat passenger asleep.
Officers were able to wake both occupants and spoke with them as part of the investigation. Police said the front-seat passenger provided officers with various controlled dangerous substances (CDS), including cannabis, along with other CDS-related items.
As the investigation continued, officers located a short-barreled rifle inside a backpack.
The driver was issued a citation for the traffic violation. The passenger, identified by police only as a 22-year-old man, was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Central Processing Unit for formal charging. Police said he was subsequently held without bond.
