Montgomery Planning is conducting a study examining how transportation between Clarksburg and Montgomery Village could be improved as the communities continue to grow.
The Montgomery Village to Clarksburg Study will analyze current traffic conditions and forecast transportation needs through 2045. The study will examine roads, public transit, walking and biking infrastructure, safety and travel times throughout the corridor.
Planning staff will attend the Stay Local Saturday event at The Clarksburg Yard/Clarksburg Church on September 10 to discuss the study with community members. Additional information can be found here.
According to Montgomery Planning, the study will identify current and future transportation deficiencies and examine travel patterns in the area. Planning staff will work with the Montgomery County Department of Transportation to determine which improvements are practical and when they could potentially be implemented.
The study was recommended as part of the 2025 technical update to the Master Plan of Highways and Transitways, which removed the unbuilt northern extension of Midcounty Highway, commonly known as M-83, from the plan.
Following the removal of M-83, the Montgomery County Council directed planners to conduct a comprehensive review of travel needs between Clarksburg and Montgomery Village. The study will evaluate whether currently planned transportation infrastructure can accommodate future development and examine the feasibility and potential timing of existing and proposed transportation improvements.
Montgomery Planning emphasized that the study is technical in nature and is not a formal planning or policy initiative. Its findings are expected to help identify which transportation options and improvements are most needed along the corridor and guide future decisions intended to improve connectivity for residents. The study launched in 2026 and is scheduled to be completed by spring 2027.
