The family of Rodney O. Givens, the Montgomery County Public Schools bus driver who died after his bus crashed into a utility pole after he suffered a medical emergency in Gaithersburg on August 25, has launched a GoFundMe to assist with funeral expenses and other needs.
According to the fundraiser, Givens suffered a heart attack while driving the school bus before it crashed near MD-355 and Central Avenue in Gaithersburg. No students were aboard the bus, and no one else was injured.
Montgomery County Police previously said Givens’ death was being handled as a medical emergency. Sixth District officers and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service personnel responded to the crash at approximately 3:04pm on Tuesday, August 25th.
Givens’ family said he proudly worked as an MCPS bus driver on route 4105 and was known for caring deeply about others. “He was loved by so many people, and anyone who knew him knew how much he cared for others,” the fundraiser states. “He loved what he did, proudly worked as a Montgomery County Public Schools bus driver on route 4105, and always put other people before himself. Above all, he loved and cherished his family more than anything.”
The fundraiser was created to help cover Givens’ funeral expenses and support his wife and two children, including his 12-year-old son, following the unexpected loss. “Losing him so suddenly has left us devastated and trying to face something we never imagined,” the family wrote. “Any donation, no matter the size, would mean so much to us as we honor his memory and give him the farewell he deserves.”
