Montgomery College has launched two new academic credentials in animation, offering students pathways toward university transfer or entry-level employment in digital media and creative technology.
The new programs include a 60-credit associate of fine arts degree and a career-focused animation certificate.
The A.F.A. combines general education coursework with extensive instruction in foundational studio art, 2D and 3D animation, character animation, motion capture and video editing. The program is designed primarily for students planning to transfer into bachelor of arts or bachelor of fine arts programs, with recommended transfer pathways to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
The animation certificate provides a shorter, workforce-oriented option focused on 2D and 3D animation techniques, software proficiency and hands-on experience with industry-standard tools and real-time motion capture systems. Montgomery College said the certificate can prepare students for technical roles in media, gaming, web design, advertising, forensics and medical technology.
Students in both programs will participate in peer reviews, complete visual problem-solving projects and build professional portfolios for employers or university admissions committees. “Animation today spans far beyond traditional entertainment, extending into interactive gaming, medical visualization, forensics and digital marketing,” said Jeff Golden, animation program coordinator. “By offering both a transfer-focused associate of fine arts degree and an industry-tailored certificate, Montgomery College ensures that every student, whether pursuing a four-year degree or rapid workforce entry, gains the technical mastery and portfolio needed to succeed.”
Coursework will take place at Montgomery College’s Rockville Campus, which features dedicated Macintosh digital art labs with drawing tablets, specialized studio space and a Vicon real-time motion capture system.
Montgomery College is an institutional member accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.
