Montgomery County Police Assistant Chief Nicholas Augustine has been named the next chief of the Maryland Transportation Authority Police following an extensive recruitment process.
Augustine, a law enforcement executive with more than 25 years of experience, will begin leading the department Oct. 2. He succeeds Colonel Joseph Scott, who retired earlier this summer after 26 years of service.
Augustine joined the Montgomery County Police Department in 2002 after previously serving as an officer with the Maryland-National Capital Park Police. Before becoming an assistant chief, he led MCPD’s Investigative Services Bureau, overseeing criminal investigations and specialized investigative operations.
His career has also included leadership roles involving patrol, tactical operations, district command, organizational administration and executive management. “The MDTA Police play a critical role in protecting some of our state’s most important transportation infrastructure, and I look forward to strengthening our partnerships and building on the strong foundation that has been established,” Augustine said.
Augustine holds degrees from the University of Maryland University College, Arizona State University and the University of Virginia. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy and Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command.
The MDTA Police are responsible for protecting Maryland’s toll facilities and other critical transportation infrastructure.
