Near-record heat and high humidity are expected across the region this week, with temperatures potentially approaching 100 degrees in some areas, according to the National Weather Service.
High temperatures are forecast to reach the lower to middle 90s Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday is expected to be the hottest day, with temperatures potentially nearing 100 degrees in parts of eastern and northeastern Virginia, around the Washington and Baltimore metropolitan areas and along the eastern side of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
The humidity will make conditions feel even hotter. Heat index values could reach 100 to 103 degrees in scattered inland areas Tuesday before becoming more widespread Wednesday, when readings of 100 to 105 degrees are possible. Heat indices are expected to remain around 103 to 105 degrees Thursday.
The National Weather Service said heat-related advisories or warnings could be issued for the three-day stretch. Although temperatures may decrease Friday as a front brings additional showers and thunderstorms, heat index values could still reach 95 to 100 degrees in many areas.
Several rounds of showers and thunderstorms are also possible throughout the week as humidity increases across the region. Forecast temperatures and heat index values could shift by several degrees, but the National Weather Service emphasized that hot and humid conditions will persist through much of the week.
