Montgomery County will celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 through October 15 with a Wheaton festival, community recognitions, library programs and other events highlighting Hispanic and Latino heritage and contributions.
Hispanic and Latino residents account for 21.7% of Montgomery County’s population, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2024 American Community Survey.
The Wheaton Hispanic Heritage Month Unity Festival will take place Saturday, September 19, from noon–4pm at Marian Fryer Town Plaza, located at 2425 Reedie Dr. County Executive Marc Elrich is scheduled to participate.
“Generation after generation, Hispanic and Latino residents have enriched our neighborhoods, strengthened our economy, and brought their cultures and traditions to every part of our country,” Elrich said. Other planned observances and events include:
- September 15-October 15: A County social media campaign recognizing Hispanic County employees.
- September 22: An event hosted by the County Executive’s Latin American Advisory Group recognizing community leaders.
- September 25: Visits by Elrich to Latino-owned businesses in East County to highlight the Latino small business community.
- September 29: Elrich will be the featured guest on “Montgomery al Día,” the County’s Spanish-language radio show, airing from 2-2:30pm on Radio America 900. Listeners can also tune in through Radio America’s website or the Montgomery County en Español Facebook page.
- October 1: The Montgomery County and Morazán Sister Cities Committee will host its 15th Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Gala from 6–10pm at Glenview Mansion, located at 603 Edmonston Dr in Rockville. The event celebrates Hispanic heritage and the sister-city relationship between Montgomery County and Morazán, El Salvador. For details and tickets, email [email protected].
Montgomery County Public Libraries will also offer author talks, music and family-friendly programs exploring Hispanic and Latino literature, history and traditions throughout the month.
As part of its 75th anniversary celebration, MCPL will feature “75 Books for Hispanic Heritage Month,” a collection of children’s books celebrating Hispanic and Latino stories and cultures. To learn more about countywide Hispanic Heritage Month events, visit the Visit Montgomery website.
