Frank Stallone recently reflected on his childhood in Silver Spring, sharing a photo from approximately 1955 and memories of growing up in Montgomery County alongside his older brother, Sylvester Stallone.
“I grew up in Silver Spring Maryland which at that time was a sleepy town,” Stallone wrote in a Facebook post. The photo was taken at Glen Echo Amusement Park and shows Stallone with members of the Colon family, who lived next door, as well as his brother Sylvester. Stallone also shared a recent photo with Mike Colon, whom he described as his oldest friend, taken approximately 71 years later.
Stallone recalled that the Colon family was from Casablanca, while his father was from Italy, describing the two families as among the few foreign families in their neighborhood at the time. He also noted that Goldie Hawn and Ben Stein lived in the neighborhood.
Stallone shared a particularly personal memory of the Colon family, recalling that when his mother left when he was 5 years old, he went to their home. The family took him in and contacted his father at work, who later came to pick him up.
The Stallone family’s connections to Montgomery County date back decades. Sylvester Stallone lived in the county from approximately ages 5 to 15 and attended Woodlin Elementary School and Montgomery Hills Junior High School. He would have also attended Montgomery Blair High School if he remained in the area.
During a previous conversation with his daughters on their Unwaxed podcast, Sylvester Stallone recalled that he had been “banned from the entire Maryland school board,” though he did not elaborate on what led to it. He said he eventually attended military school during his junior high years.
Their father, Frank Stallone Sr., also had deep ties to Montgomery County. He owned hair salons in Silver Spring and Darnestown and was a member of the Potomac Polo Club in Poolesville. According to Frank Stallone Sr.’s obituary, the family lived in Silver Spring for several years before briefly moving to Potomac. Sylvester Stallone and his mother eventually relocated to Philadelphia, while his father remained in the Montgomery County area until the mid-1990s.
