The Olney community is mourning the loss of longtime resident George J. Mantzouranis, who passed away on September 9 at the age of 60.
Mantzouranis was a lifelong member of the Olney community and a familiar face to many through his remarkable 45 years working for Giant Food. The Giant location in Olney has also shared a notice of his passing at the store.
According to his obituary, Mantzouranis was affectionately known by many as “The Mayor of Olney,” a nickname reflecting the connections he built throughout the community over the years.
Born March 8, 1966, in Washington, D.C., Mantzouranis graduated from Sherwood High School in 1984 before earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and Business Management from the University of Maryland in 1989. He later earned several Network Engineering certifications and had a career spanning technology, business and retail leadership.
His 45 years with Giant Food represented a particularly significant part of his life. His obituary remembers him for his work ethic, integrity and commitment to excellence. Many residents remember him as a consistent and pleasant presence at the grocery store for decades.
Mantzouranis was also proud of his Greek heritage and spent childhood summers connecting with that heritage through travel. Among his other interests were snow skiing, water skiing and kiteboarding.
“Above all, George treasured his family, friends, colleagues, and community,” his obituary reads. Mantzouranis’ obituary remembers his legacy through the family he loved, the traditions he carried forward and the many people he encountered during a lifetime spent as part of the Olney community.
