Maryland native and WWE Superstar LA Knight will have another opportunity to reach the top of WWE when he challenges Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship at Money in the Bank on Saturday, October 10.
Knight, whose real name is Shaun Ricker, grew up in Hagerstown and graduated from North Hagerstown High School in 2000. Now one of WWE’s most recognizable stars, Knight will enter Money in the Bank looking to capture one of the biggest championships in professional wrestling.
The match will also serve as a rematch of sorts from one of the biggest moments of Knight’s career. In November 2023, Knight challenged Reigns for the WWE Universal Championship at Crown Jewel but was unsuccessful in his attempt to end Reigns’ lengthy championship run. Nearly three years later, the Maryland native will once again stand across the ring from Reigns with a world championship on the line.
Knight’s rise to the top of WWE came after a long journey through professional wrestling. After graduating from high school, Ricker attended wrestling school in Cincinnati while working as a server at Ruby Tuesday. He received his first WWE “dark match” on May 5, 2006, teaming with another newcomer, Jon Moxley, in a handicap match against The Big Show.
Ricker continued working on the independent wrestling circuit before appearing on The Hero, a reality competition hosted by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. He later signed with WWE’s developmental brand, NXT, before eventually leaving the company.
He went on to find success in Impact Wrestling as Eli Drake, becoming one of the promotion’s top stars, and later competed in the NWA before returning to WWE and NXT as LA Knight. After being called up to WWE’s main roster, Ricker was initially repackaged as Max Dupri, manager of Maximum Male Models. The character was short-lived, and he soon returned to the LA Knight name.
A feud with the late Bray Wyatt, which culminated in a match at the 2023 Royal Rumble, helped introduce Knight to a much larger audience. His popularity continued to grow rapidly, eventually leading to his first championship opportunity against Reigns later that year.
The outspoken LA Knight character is a significant departure from the person Ricker has said he was while growing up in Hagerstown. In a since-archived interview with the Ottawa Citizen, Ricker recalled being an extremely shy child despite always wanting to perform. “I was a very shy kid, but I always wanted to be a performer,” Ricker said, describing how he would pretend the metal attachments from a hand mixer were microphones and sing and dance behind a door where he thought nobody could see him.
Knight returned to Maryland earlier this year for a meet-and-greet at Oak, Barrel & Vine in White Oak, where fans lined up down the block for a chance to meet him. The June event, presented by Wheatley American Vodka and Alcohol Beverage Services Montgomery County, drew wrestling fans of all ages. Some arrived hours before the 5pm start, including four fans from Baltimore County who arrived at 6am to secure the first spots in line.
That turnout offered another example of the local following Knight has maintained as his WWE career has grown. On October 10, the former North Hagerstown High School student will get another opportunity to do what he was unable to accomplish three years earlier… defeat Roman Reigns with a world championship at stake.
