Maryland has been named to Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2027 list, placing the state among 50 destinations and experiences around the world selected by the travel publication’s global community of experts.
The recognition highlights Maryland’s mix of history, culture, outdoor recreation, food and waterfront destinations, including experiences stretching from Baltimore and Annapolis to the Eastern Shore, Southern Maryland and Western Maryland.
“Maryland is a place where history, culture, nature and innovation come together, and this recognition from Lonely Planet gives travelers around the world another reason to experience it for themselves,” Gov. Wes Moore said. “Tourism is an important part of our state’s economy, supporting businesses, workers and communities across Maryland.”
According to the state, 47.4 million visitors traveled to Maryland in 2025, visiting historic sites, waterfront destinations and outdoor recreation areas while taking part in the state’s arts, cultural and food and beverage offerings.
Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2027 features 50 destinations and experiences selected by the publisher’s global travel experts. This year’s selections emphasize meaningful experiences, slower travel and opportunities to explore beyond more familiar tourist destinations.
Maryland’s tourism offerings highlighted by the state include the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic coast, historic communities, scenic byways, trails, museums, arts and culture, outdoor recreation and the state’s culinary traditions.
“Travelers today are looking for experiences that connect them to the places they visit, and Maryland offers that in abundance,” Maryland Office of Tourism Managing Director Cassandra Vanhooser said. “Whether exploring our history, getting out on the water, enjoying our food and culture or discovering a new community, visitors can create a Maryland experience that is uniquely their own.”
The recognition also comes ahead of a major anniversary in 2027, when Maryland will commemorate the 200th anniversary of American railroading.
Maryland is considered the birthplace of American railroading, with the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad chartered in 1827. The state plans to use the bicentennial to highlight its railroad heritage, including historic railroad communities, rail trails and other destinations across Maryland.
