Montgomery County native and former Washington Spirit standout Joanna Lohman will compete for the $1 million prize on Season 39 of CBS’ “The Amazing Race.”
Lohman announced that she and fellow former professional soccer player Ali Krieger will compete together on the upcoming season, which premieres Wednesday, September 30. The pair described themselves as “two badass female athletes, moms, and celesbians” who have spent their lives competing for “trophies, honor, equality and justice.”
Lohman grew up in Montgomery County and began her youth soccer career with the Bethesda Scorpions before starring at Springbrook High School, where she earned All-Met honors. She went on to play at Penn State, becoming the first player in program history to earn First Team All-Big Ten honors in all four seasons, according to the Montgomery County Sports Hall of Fame. Lohman was also a four-time Academic All-American.
Her 18-year professional soccer career included stops in Philadelphia and Boston as well as international experience in Spain and Sweden. Locally, she played two stints with the Washington Freedom before spending the final four years of her professional career with the Washington Spirit of the NWSL. Lohman also represented the U.S. Women’s National Team from 2001 through 2007. The Spirit retired Lohman’s No. 15 jersey in 2019.
On “The Amazing Race,” Lohman and Krieger will be one of 13 teams of new competitors racing around the world. Teams compete in challenges at destinations along the route, with teams finishing last on individual legs facing elimination. The first team to reach the final destination will win Season 39 and the $1 million grand prize. “The Amazing Race” is hosted by Phil Keoghan and has won multiple Emmy Awards during its run.
Lohman said she and Krieger will be competing for more than the prize money, writing that they are “racing for a million dollars and a million voices who have turned up the volume of our rise.” Season 39 premieres Wednesday, September 30 on CBS.
