Beloved Ethiopian Restaurant To Close After Nearly 30 Years

Dukem Ethiopian Restaurant, a longtime fixture at 1114-1118 U Street NW in Washington, D.C., has announced that it will close after nearly 30 years in business. The restaurant’s final day of service, including its upstairs lounge, will be Saturday, November 7.

Dukem traces its history back to 1997, when the family opened a carryout and market based on founder Tefera Zewdie’s vision. Over the years, it grew into a landmark and gathering place for Ethiopian food, culture, music and nightlife in Washington.

“Dukem has always been more than just a restaurant,” the family shared. “What began as our father Tefera Zewdie’s dream grew into a landmark and gathering place for family, friends and community, bringing together longtime lovers of Ethiopian food and those experiencing it for the very first time.”

The family thanked generations of customers, employees, regulars, friends and community members who supported the restaurant throughout its run. “We hope you’ll join us during these final weeks to share another meal, raise a glass, reminisce and celebrate the memories we’ve created together.”

The announcement was signed by Hiwot Gebru, Yodit Tefera and Lydia Tefera, owners and family of Dukem Ethiopian Restaurant.
