Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) successfully rescued a worker who became trapped when a trench collapsed outside a single-family home on Falls Bridge Lane in Potomac Tuesday afternoon.
According to MCFRS, the worker was performing waterproofing work along the exterior of the home when the trench collapsed around him at approximately 3:20 p.m., covering him with dirt and trapping his lower body.
Technical rescue crews worked for more than three hours to free the worker. During the operation, crews inside the home breached a basement wall using hand tools to gain better access to his lower legs, while a vacuum truck was used to remove soil from the trench.
The worker was conscious throughout the rescue and was successfully extracted at approximately 6:30 p.m. He was transferred to a Maryland State Police helicopter and transported in serious but stable condition.
